EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
